Pioneering in the Petaluma Gap with Sangiacomo Vineyards, Black Kite & Saxon Brown

The Sangiacomo family has always felt a deep connection to the land — most especially through farming. It all began in Genoa, Italy where a good day’s work for patriarch Vittorio Sangiacomo started and ended in the field. For decades the family has been dedicated to farming in Sonoma County, since 1927. Grapegrowers with a passion for sustainability and stewardship, the third generation of the Sangiacomo family continues to pursue perfection in farming every row of their vineyards.

In 1999, they pioneered into the northern edge of the Petaluma Gap region and planted the Roberts Road Vineyard; an iconic 130-acre site that has now become one of the most prestigious vineyards farmed by the family and one of the most highly desired sites in the Petaluma Gap AVA with rows allocated to over 40 different producers. The fog from the ocean near Bodega Bay pours into this region first and exits last. Well-drained cobblestone soils and cool, foggy mornings make for a long growing season for these extremely small berries and low-yielding vines. The grapes ripen slowly and develop deep, rich flavors making for rare wines with natural acidity and suppleness.

In this five-course dinner, discover the diverse expressions of pinot noir from three different producers each sourcing pinot noir from Roberts Road Vineyard. Join grapegrower Steve Sangiacomo and Sangiacomo Family Wines winemaker James MacPhail with special guest Jeff Gaffner, owner/winemaker of Saxon Brown Wines and winemaker for Black Kite, in an immersive discussion of terroir and the unique impact of long-standing grower-winemaker relationships in producing site-driven wines that exemplify the trademark style of this vineyard – rich and dedicate with supple texture.
