A native Californian, Coby Parker-Garcia’s love of farming was forged as a child working in his family’s garden in San Luis Obispo. After extensive trips to Europe and South America, he knew viticulture and winemaking were his true calling and enrolled in Cal Poly. There, he studied Agribusiness, Wine and Viticulture and worked on the campus’ vineyard learning the ins and outs of growing cool-climate grapes.
As a student, Coby won an internship at acclaimed Claiborne & Churchill Winery located in the Edna Valley AVA. 5 Years later, he was named Claiborne & Churchill’s Winemaker, a position he held for 17 years.
In 2013, Coby launched El Lugar Wines, which means “The Place” in Spanish. El Lugar has a singular focus: to craft premium, site-specific Pinot Noir from distinct vineyards throughout California’s Central Coast.
If Coby is not knee deep in winemaking, he enjoys time with his family, hanging at the beach, mountain biking, cooking, and sharing wine with family and friends.
Since 2009, Coby has served on the Board of Directors for the World of Pinot Noir.
"I take a hands-on approach to winemaking. Get in and get dirty,” says Coby. “As a winemaker, I’m there to highlight the site and showcase the best qualities of each vintage. El Lugar wines are not the biggest, boldest, or the most tannic, but they do boast elegance, balance, structure, verve and pair well with food.”
