  • 2019 Artesa Selection 91 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Los Carneros
    Expand
Artesa’s first Single Vineyard Pinot Noir was our beloved “Block 91 D”. Originally planted in 1991, the site is planted on a steep south-facing hillside block which is unique in Carneros for two reasons: elevation and soil type. The site sits on one of the highest elevations in Carneros vineyards, at 420 feet of elevation. The soils (Bressa-Dibble) are light textured silt loam and different from the common Carneros soils of mostly, “shallow, heavy clay”. This unique terroir provides high drainage capacity and regulates vine vigor. In 2017, the block was replanted with the same clone (Martini) and while we patiently wait for it to bear fruit again the winemaking team agreed that there were other premium sites of the Martini Clone on the Estate worth being bottled on their own and so, “Selection 91” was created in homage to the original “Block 91 D”. For this vintage, we selected two hillside vineyard blocks that mirrored “Block 91 D” being both high in elevation, with Bressa-Dibble soil and planted with the Martini clone to produce fruit with unique intensity and structure. The combination of the terroir, Martini clone and meticulous farming result in this Pinot Noir that has power and grace at the same time. This is a powerful Pinot Noir, yet well balanced, and true to its Los Carneros roots.

  • 2020 Artesa Grand Reserve Brut Rose
    Los Carneros
    Expand
This sparkling wine is 100% Pinot Noir, the most widely planted variety in Champagne, and is produced using the labor-intensive and meticulous winemaking process known as “méthode champenoise” (also known as “traditional method”). Primary fermentation occurs in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and neutral French oak barrels; the wine also went through complete malolactic fermentation. The next crucial step is the assemblage – this process is an artform where the winemaker must carefully decide which lots can complement each other. Our winemaker, Ana Diogo-Draper, finds the special combination of aromas and flavors needed for the final blend. After assemblage the wines are ready for tirage. Tirage refers to drawing off the blended still wines into bottles and adding a combination of sugar and yeast to each bottle where the final fermentation for sparkling wines occurs. This wine rested en tirage for 16 months and was disgorged in October 2022. This sparkling Rosé presents elegant and intense aromas of strawberry, maraschino cherry, marzipan, with a hint of rose petal. Brilliant on the palate, the lush red berry flavors are balanced by the natural bright acidity, cutting through the mid-palate with tiny refreshing bubbles.

Description

Thirty years ago, Spain’s oldest winemaking family, Raventós Codorníu, planted new roots in Carneros, building upon a 470-year winemaking legacy to create the next generation of estate-grown, artisan wines. We named it Artesa, which is Catalan for “artisanal.”

Artesa is a sophisticated, joyful, Spanish-American brand that delivers authentic craftsmanship in small-production wines made with passion and shared with warmth. Our Estate vineyards are set in the steep foothills that straddle the Carneros and Mt. Veeder AVAs. An ideal mix of topography and cool, coastal climate make our location perfect for growing our flagship Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

In homage to our Spanish roots, and because we have the right terroir for these varietals, we also plant both estate Albariño and Tempranillo. Artesa’s winemaking team is led by Ana Diogo-Draper, Director of Winemaking. Born and raised in Portugal, Diogo-Draper joined Artesa in 2013, which saw the beginning of her influence of low-intervention and component winemaking—focusing on one small lot at a time to express distinct parcels before composing the final blend. Diogo-Draper brings to Artesa the influence of her European training while being inspired by the innovation and experimentation fostered in the United States
