    Mt Harlan
    Expand
Calera’s Mt. Harlan Vineyards are located in the Gavilan Mountains 25 miles east of the Monterey Bay. The site was chosen for its limestone soils and ideal climate. At an average elevation of 2,200 feet it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California. Winemaker Notes Grown high on the limestone-rich soils of Mt. Harlan, this beautifully aromatic wine displays enticing layers of Honeycrisp apple, peach and fresh brioche. The apple and stone fruit layers are echoed on the lush, mouthcoating palate, with undercurrents of cedar, wet stone and spice adding nuance and complexity to a long, resonant finish. Production After a cool winter, the 2020 growing season began with spring rains that replenished our soils on Mt. Harlan and set the stage for an excellent vintage. After a late-March budbreak, we enjoyed temperate, sunny days and cool nights throughout spring and summer, allowing the grapes to slowly ripen, while preserving the bright natural acids that we prize. With no significant heat events, the 2020 vintage produced age-worthy wines with enticing aromatics, lovely freshness and purity, and beautifully delineated varietal flavors. WINE SPECS Acid - 0.58 g/100 ml pH - 3.33 Aging - Aged for 15 months in 100% French oak 30% new, 70% neutral Alcohol % - 14.5

Winemaker Notes At more than 40 years old, the coveted old vines of Jensen Vineyard have produced a stunning wine that offers depth, elegance and layered complexity. On the nose, aromas of ripe plum and persimmon flirt with more dramatic black fruit undertones. The palate is lush and mouth-filling, striking a seamless balance between energetic red berry flavors and deeper flavors of black cherry and blackberry that glide to a long, resonant finish. Production While a cool, wet winter and spring on Mt. Harlan led to a late budbreak in our vineyards, moderate summer temperatures with no late-season heat events ensured that the fruit enjoyed abundant hangtime. Harvest began in late September and continued throughout October, resulting in elegant and age-worthy whites with lovely underlying power, and graceful and dynamic reds with complex layers of bright fruit and savory spice. Description

In 1975, Josh Jensen founded Calera and the now iconic Mt. Harlan Vineyard in the Gavilan Mountains of California’s Central Coast. Inspired by his mentors in Burgundy, who have grown Pinot Noir in limestone-rich soils for centuries; Jensen’s goal was to unearth limestone-rich soils in California, to create unique and stylish terroir-driven Pinot Noirs. Nearly 50 years later, under the talented leadership of Winemaker Mike Waller, Calera wines are revered globally for their elegance, complexity and stylish expression of the Central Coast terroir.
