Wines Pouring

  • 2019 One Sixteen Chardonnay
    Russian River Valley
    Expand
Celebrating the cool-climate character and complexity of California’s most revered winegrowing regions, our 2019 Appellation Series wines showcase what can be achieved from iconic sites in an exceptional vintage. Intricately structured with soaring flavors, this is a vintage not to miss. The marine influence that follows the Russian River inland from the Pacific coast is a powerful attribute of this region. The fog helps keep nights cool and offers the vines a well-deserved break from daytime temperatures. The collection of famous Chardonnay vineyards that we work with for this wine are located in the coolest parts of the Russian River Valley. Here, fruit can mature gracefully on the vine, which we find offers us more intensely focused flavors. Individual pressed lots were fermented in barrel or foudres, all 100% native primary and malolactic fermentations, which adds depth and complexity to the finished wine. With brilliant clarity and a bouquet of green apple, pear, and persimmon aromas, this radiant Chardonnay makes a stunning first impression. The palate strikes a lovely balance between richness and bright acidity, with succulent orchard fruit flavors and a kiss of French oak carrying the wine to a long, shimmering finish.

  • 2018 El Diablo Chardonnay
    Russian River Valley
    Expand
Planted in 2008, El Diablo Vineyard has an average elevation of 500 feet. This tightly spaced vineyard encourages competition between the vines for a fixed amount of nutrients, resulting in reduced yields and exemplary quality. Minimal cellar intervention and impressive terroir combine to create a wine that is both opulent and elegant. Crafted from the famed Montrachet and Robert Young clones, this is one of the finest Chardonnays we have ever produced, combining remarkable tension and length with an almost weightless sense of richness. In the winery, we aged 52% of the wine for 11 months in large-format foudres before transferring it to 60-gallon French oak barrels to impart a leesy richness. The result is as delicious as it is complex, with riveting layers of lychee, lemon zest, brioche, honeycomb, apple blossom, and crème brulée.

  • 2019 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
    Santa Lucia Highlands
    Expand
Celebrating the cool-climate character and complexity of California’s most revered winegrowing regions, our 2019 Appellation Series wines showcase what can be achieved from iconic sites in an exceptional vintage. Intricately structured with soaring flavors, this is a vintage not to miss. Located on the eastern slopes of the coastal range that shelters the fertile Salinas Valley from Big Sur, this appellation is relatively new, with the first vineyards being developed only in the 1970s. Surprisingly, these central coast slopes are generally cooler than the Russian River Valley, largely due to the ocean breezes and fog coming in from Monterey Bay. The vineyards are sheltered by the coastal peaks that limit rainfall. Pinot Noir excels on these hillsides - which is why our travels took us here. During the 2019 vintage, moderate winds from the Monterey Bay cooled the region, while ideal evening and morning fog lingered, attributing to the rich phenolic development, vibrant acidity, and thoughtfully refined tannins. Beautifully articulated layers of raspberry, blackberry, black licorice, and hints of citrus blossom leap from the glass, while the palate unfurls a dynamic tension and vitality, leading into a long and complex finish.

  • 2019 Gap's Crown Pinot Noir
    Sonoma Coast
    Expand
Gap's Crown is considered by many to be one of the best representations of what the Petaluma Gap AVA, which spans an area of more than 200,000 acres, is all about. Since we began working with this site in 2006, its meteoric rise into the pantheon of great Pinot Noir vineyards has been extraordinary. Sweeping vineyards with dramatic elevation changes and clonal variety define this celebrated site. Each year, this wine appeals to Burgundy fanatics and California Pinot lovers alike. From its pleasing tension to its generous flavors of blueberry, baking spices and crème fraîche, this is a classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir with playful acidity and fresh, balanced richness.

  • 2017 Mt. Carmel Pinot Noir
    Sta. Rita Hills
    Expand
Planted in 1989, on steep and rugged land surrounding an abandoned Carmelite monastery, Mt. Carmel was one of the first vineyards planted in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Just 50 miles northwest of Santa Barbara, California, the historic 24-acre vineyard consists of primarily dry-farmed, heritage Chardonnay and Pinot Noir clones. With a unique soil composition, the wines produced from the Mt. Carmel vineyard are strikingly exquisite. By fermenting in mostly French oak and concrete tanks, coupled with extended barrel aging to integrate tannins, we were able to craft a bright and uplifting Pinot with concentration, exceptional depth, and structural complexity.
    Suggested Retail Price: $200.00
  • 2016 Cerise Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Anderson Valley
    Expand
Just 65 miles north of our winery in Sebastopol, CA is a parcel of land with raw, rustic character, and potential that we have only begun to tap into. It is here, in Anderson Valley, where our journey to find world-class Pinot Noir brought us in 2016. When visiting Cerise, one can feel the dichotomy of the land. Tameless and wild, but nonetheless beautiful. The terrain is unrelenting, with slopes as steep as 30% ranging from 587 ft to 1,620 ft elevation. Pinot Noir blocks sit on the eastern side of the valley, facing west, 16 miles from the coast. The unparalleled site has had a history of producing world-class wines and we are thrilled to now be stewards of this ranch and tell its story across future vintages. As the years progress, we will continue to pursue wines that speak of their sense of place and invite you to join us on this exciting journey.

  • 2014 Kanzler Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Sonoma Coast
    Expand
Back in 2002, Steve Kanzler believed in Kosta Browne enough to take a chance and sell us some of our first Pinot Noir. He then doubled down and became one of our early investors. At that time a largely unknown vineyard, Kanzler has gone on to become a jewel of the Sonoma Coast. A later-ripening site, the vineyard holds the cool weather longer than others we work with. This brings a verve and edge to the character of the fruit, which keeps us coming back for more. The gently sloping vineyard is a former apple orchard, just outside the town of Sebastopol. Consisting of clones 115, 667 and Pommard, this vineyard delivers complexity, strength and purity, along with wines exhibiting a sensuous mouth feel.
    Suggested Retail Price: $645.00
  • 2015 Giusti Ranch Pinot Noir
    Russian River Valley
    Expand
The Giusti family’s Sonoma County roots are about as deep as you can find in California. We’ve made wine from their fruit since 2004 and have enjoyed a great relationship with patriarch Angelo and his kin. They farm their Forestville vineyard with uncommon attention to detail and work closely with us to fine tune their efforts in order to help us get the highest quality possible. This vineyard has slightly warmer days than others we source, developing darker fruit flavors in the grapes that grow around the old homestead. This property charts the agricultural history of our region well. Farmed by the same family since 1870’s, the ranch has been planted to olives, cherries, prunes, apples and, of course, grapes. A fig tree, planted by the original founding family, still thrives on site.
    Suggested Retail Price: $600.00

Description

Since Kosta Browne's founding over twenty years ago, we have been on an unrelenting mission to produce the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that can stand beside the best in the world. Founders Dan Kosta and Michael Browne started with humble beginnings while working together in a local restaurant in 1997. Through perseverance, passion, and hard work, our wines became the source of some of America's greatest terroir-driven Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, eventually earning Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" for our 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

Today, we have roots in the most sought-after soils on the West Coast. From the windswept Sonoma Coast to the hallowed vine rows of the Russian River Valley to the untamed Anderson Valley and the cool-climate enclaves of the Santa Lucia Highlands and Sta. Rita Hills, we are honored to work with some of the most celebrated vineyards while remaining dedicated to the values of our founders. Obsessed with quality and unafraid to seek artistry by being unconventional, our team continues its mission, meticulously crafting irresistible wines with thought-provoking complexity and ever-evolving character.
