Our family has been growing premium wine grapes since the mid 80's, with roots in Sonoma County’s Knights Valley. In 1996, our patriarch Ron Melville’s desire to plant cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah brought Melville Vineyards to the Sta. Rita Hills before the area had gained notoriety. Ron’s sons, Chad and Brent, planted the vineyard from raw land in 1997 and 1998, and the journey continues to endure with tremendous passion and dedication today.
Chad (Head Winegrower) and our full-time vineyard crew nurture the 120 estate acres organically, paying close attention to the health of both the vines and the soil – farming aggressively, yet carefully, and with the utmost respect to Mother Nature. At the time of harvest, we consider our wines to already be made, and strive to not interfere with their natural path in the cellar. To this effect, we maintain a minimalistic approach by aging our wines only in neutral French oak and stainless steel and utilize whole cluster fermentation to contribute to the depth, structure, and complexity of our wines.
