Once the first – always the first. In 1971, the first pioneering vineyards in Santa Barbara were planted at Sanford Winery.
This renowned cool climate AVA was not only launched by the planting of the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard but also expanded to neighbors’ plantings through cuttings from this vineyard.
For over 40 years now, this iconic vineyard has set the standard for quality in the region and is also home to the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the county. Today the estate is owned, farmed, and cared for by the Terlato family and is comprised of the Sanford & Benedict and La Rinconada Ranches and their vineyards.
Winemaker Trey Fletcher’s focus is to craft wines that are clear and true representations of this unique and extraordinary site. Trey employs a visionary, seamless and thoughtful approach to winegrowing which, for him, is the cornerstone to Sanford’s quality and future.
Trey’s experience includes work at some of California’s most acclaimed wineries, including Littorai, and Bien Nacido. . He spent several years on a globe-trotting winemaking career following the harvest between Switzerland, New Zealand, Argentina and Northern California. Trey then went on to graduate in viticulture and enology from Fresno State University, with the desire of making wine in California. Trey has called Santa Barbara County his home for the past 11 years.
