As we monitor the regional COVID-19 guidelines, we are cautiously moving forward with planning of the 2021 World of Pinot Noir Technical Symposium. Your WOPN Tech team does feel that Tech should happen this year for many reasons. There will be compelling wines to taste – it was a crazy vintage for most. We all miss community. We do know that hosting 80 winemakers together in one venue is not feasible or responsible for 2021. Given that, we are working out a way to shift and adjust. We do it with each vintage and we can do it with a pandemic.
How it will work
There will be up to 5 satellite locations - Santa Barbara, Sonoma, Willamette Valley, San Luis Obispo and the Great Lakes Region - for Tech, each of which will be linked together via a virtual connection through Zoom on June 16, 2021.
Each satellite location will physically host 6-10 winemakers, keeping all socially distant while still being able to taste and share opinions.
For those of you who have previously attended Tech, think of each satellite location as a table.
From there, the format will remain the same. Four flights, taste blind silently. Group discussion, spokesperson and discuss together!
Thomas Houseman has agreed to moderate again this year and will be bringing in Pinot Noir producers from the Great Lakes region. This new digital format does allow us to expand our geographic research!
We still ask that you bring “something to teach/learn,” and with the various conditions we all experienced in 2020, this should bring very interesting discussions.
Baker Wine & Grape Analysis is our lab partner this year and will provide analysis and have specialists linked in.
Our welcome BBQ and gala dinner will need to wait until another year, but lunch (and beer) will still be provided.
First attendee: $250 Each additional attendee: $175
A processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 will be applied to all transactions
