We at the World of Pinot Noir are hanging our heads in grief with the news that our friend – and legendary Santa Barbara vintner and founder of Au Bon Climat – Jim Clendenen, has passed.
But, as Jim would have wanted, we are also raising a glass to him, saluting and celebrating his life’s work that helped California Central Coast Pinot Noir earn its rightful place among the world’s best.
Santa Barbara County-based Au Bon Climat was one of the Founding Wineries of World Pinot Noir, and Jim remained a seminal figure throughout the 21 years of the annual event.
“Because of his influence – and tireless enthusiasm – it’s safe to say that without Jim’s blessing and participation, WOPN (World of Pinot Noir) would have never attained the success and growth it has seen over the years,” said WOPN Board President and Founder of El Lugar Winery, Coby Parker-Garcia. “We will forever remain in Jim’s debt.”
While Jim is best known for cementing Santa Barbara as a premier cool-climate region and ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Jim’s reach and influence stretches to Australia and Burgundy, where he remains a beloved peer and icon.
Jovial, inviting, selfless and always with an eye to the future, Jim mentored several generations of winemakers, and his legacy will be carried forward for years to come.
“I saw Jim last Thursday. We had a good laugh, he gave me some wine advice, and said, ‘see you next time,’ but you better stay for lunch,” said Parker-Garcia, referring to Jim’s now-legendary weekly wine lunches at Au Bon Climat.
Each week, at a single communal table, Jim would host a mix of friends, fans, farmers, fellow vintners from all over the world, and of course young people who were just beginning their careers in the industry.
“The Central Coast, and the wine world as a whole, lost a true legend,” said Parker-Garcia.
