  • 2021 Hamilton Russell Oregon Zena Crown Pinot Noir
Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola-Amity Hills, Zena Crown vineyard
    Expand
Hamilton Russell Oregon aims to express this variety with the restraint, minerality and classicism of great European Pinot Noir and the bright purity of Willamette Valley fruit. The celebrated Zena Crown vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills delivers alluring dark spice aromas and flavors alongside tensile fine-grained tannins to balance the complex blue and black berry fruit which the best Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs are known for. This beautifully balanced wine will evolve over time to become even more layered and complex. 93 Owen Bargreen, US wine writer, May 2023 Smooth and polished, the 2021 Hamilton Russell Oregon ‘Zena Crown’ Pinot Noir shows off tart cranberry, guava and reed raspberry fruits alongside freshly tilled soils and shades of pomegranate seed with blood orange zest. Very fruity and lithe, this is outstanding Pinot Noir that has only started to hit its stride. 95 Jeremy Young, International Wine Report, May 2023 A glistening medium magenta core with a light pink rim in the glass, the 2021 Zena Crown Pinot Noir from Hamilton Russell shows expressive aromas of fresh lilac flowers, red raspberries, thimbleberries, dusty earth, and hints of cedary herbs. Made in a very elegant style with sweet tannins, lemony acidity, and a lean but gorgeous finish, it’s a lovely wine that should age well for another decade with proper cellaring.

Expressive aromas of fresh raspberry and boysenberry are complemented by suggestions of potpourri, cola, vanilla and exotic spices. Blends depth and vivacity with a deft hand, offering appealingly sweet Chambord, blue fruit and spicecake flavors and a touch of mocha. Smooth, even tannins frame a very long, sappy finish that leaves red fruit preserve and floral notes behind."

Description

Hamilton Russell Oregon is a producer of carefully selected single vineyard Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is owned and operated by Olive Hamilton Russell. She gained experience through decades long involvement in the world of wine, and played an active role in the management of Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Ashbourne and Southern Right wineries with her husband Anthony Hamilton Russell, the owner of these internationally renowned South African wineries. It is Hamilton Russell Oregon’s goal to express the very best attributes of Willamette Valley Pinot noir fruit in a classical style emphasizing spice and structure, and Willamette Valley Chardonnay fruit in a bright, restrained mineral style.

Serendipitous relationships enabled access to Pinot Noir grapes from the very best vineyard sites from the beginning. With the Southern Hemisphere vintage safely maturing in the cellar, Hamilton Russell Vineyards winemaker Emul Ross was able to travel to Oregon to make the maiden vintage in 2018. Working initially with two famous Pinot noir vineyards in the sub-AVA’s of Eola-Amity Hills and Ribbon Ridge, the decision was made in 2019 to settled on a single Pinot noir from the Zena Crown Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, adding an exciting new (2014 planted) Chardonnay vineyard, Maple Grove. Today Emul is still making the wines, with Olive assisting.
