  • 2022 Melville Estate Pinot Noir - Sandy's Block
Sta. Rita Hills, Melville Estate Vineyard
    Expand
Named after Chad’s beloved Aunt Sandy, this block is situated on the east side of our estate, to the north of the winery, and is planted on low-nutrient, well-drained sandy soil…which, although might be surprising, is an ideal environment for this wine. As not much thrives in pure sand (think desert cactus), growing vines in sandy soil requires consistent care and attention from our farming team. The balance we create, along with pinot noir’s tendency to reflect the characteristics of the soil, leads Sandy’s fruit to develop a lifted, delicate, and pretty wine with intense notes of a red fruit bouquet. Sandy’s Block includes selections from Calera (clone 90) and clones 828, 459 and 114, which when grown in sand (in addition to perfumed aromatics) deliver an ethereal and harmonic palate impression. With 50% whole cluster, the fruit is fermented with skin and stem contact for about 30 days, followed by eight gentle hours in our basket press, before going into neutral French oak.

  • 2022 Melville Estate Pinot Noir - Anna's Block
Sta. Rita Hills, Melville Estate Vineyard
    Expand
Over on the west side lies Anna’s Block, planted in 2001 on a gentle southern slope in the northwest portion of the vineyard. This area is one of our most even-ripening blocks as the rows are planted in a north-south orientation, receiving a consistent exposure to the cold-climate sun. The soil is a well-drained and low nutrient sandy loam, causing the vines to work incredibly hard to survive. This stress, combined with our targeted care and attention, leads Anna’s to produce small clusters and small berries, which equate to concentrated fruit that is exquisitely perfumed and inviting. Planted to two Dijon clones working well in tandem, Clone 667 is known for producing high-quality wines in Burgundy and brings intense color, structure, depth and ageability, while the earlier ripening Clone 114 offers richness and stuffing. 67% whole cluster.

Description

Melville is a family-owned, 100% estate, organic vineyard and winery in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County. We produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and a small amount of Grenache. All our wines, from our flagship Estate Pinot Noir to our Small Lot Collection Donna’s Block Syrah, are hand-grown and hand-made 100 cases at a time.

We have been practicing responsible farming for over three decades, and since 1997 in the Sta. Rita Hills when brothers Chad and Brent Melville planted our estate vineyards (before the AVA was formally established). We take great pride in our commitment to “winegrowing”…working in harmony with Mother Nature to nurture our land through organic and sustainable farming practices to ensure that all of the most crucial work is done in the vineyard.
